A late yellow flag set up what appeared to be a six-lap dash to the finish between Josh Nelms and Mike Monroe in Saturday night's late-model feature at Illiana Speedway. But third-running Jeff Cannon had other ideas. The current points leader instead turned the last six laps into his own personal power show, taking his No. 33 to the high side and blowing past first, Monroe, and then Nelms. Cannon wound up beating Nelms to the finish line by 0.593 seconds. It was his third win of the 2007 season. Cannon was more or a less a spectator for the first half of the race, which saw a tremendous side-by-side battle up front between Nelms and Andy Marchiniak. Monroe and Cannon, running third and fourth, didn't really have any options until those two sorted themselves out. Cannon, actually, had some early problems of his own to deal with. "I was just trying to go around the track," he said. "My car was so tight, I couldn't make it. I started putting rear brake into it so I could get it turned in, and finally I got there." Before Cannon "got there," Nelms was finally able to clear Marchiniak on the bottom. Monroe soon after moved into second, and the yellow flag on lap 19 tightened things up for a restart. Neither could have known just what Cannon had in store for them. "I didn't want to see that caution," Nelms said. "My crate motor was sluggish on the restarts. I had to hold the bottom, and when I'm holding I'm scrubbing off speed. "I gave Cannon the outside lane. He ran me real good. But to finish second here with a crate motor is like a win for us." Thanks Butch, Carl, Jason, Kerrie (the owner), my dad Mike, Dave (for all the pictures and website) Dwayne, Jamie, Lynn, Shannon, and Jennifer (my cheering section). Without you guys we wouldn't be where we are today!

FRESH OF ANOTHER STRONG RUN WITH THE LATE MODEL DIVISION. JOSH AND THE KJ MOTORSPORTS TEAM WAS LOOKING TO BUILD ON THE SUCCESS. AS THE TEAM SITS OUTSIDE THE TOP 10 THEY ARE LOOKING TO FOR SOME MORE STRONG RUNS TO FINISH IN THE TOP 10 RUNNING ONLY A LIMITED SCHEDULE. IN PRACTICE JOSH WAS HAPPY WITH THE CAR AND WAS SECOND QUICKEST IN THE FIRST PRACTICE SESSION. OPTING NOT TO PUT ANY NEW TIRES ON JOSH RAN THE SAME TIRES AS LAST WEEK AND QUALIFIED A 20.12 GOOD FOR 6TH QUICK. IN THE HEAT JOSH STAYED WITH THE FRONT RUNNERS DESPITE FIGHTING A TIGHT RACECAR AND FINISHED 4TH. WHILE DISCUSSING WITH BUTCH ON WHAT TO FIX, IT WAS TALKED ABOUT AN ADJUSTMENT TO THE FRONT SPRINGS OR REAR SHOCKS. AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT WE CHOSE THE REAR SHOCKS AND FOUND A PROBLEM IN THE LEFT REAR. KNOWING THAT THE SHOCK WAS NOT ADJUSTED PROPERLY, THE TEAM CHOSE JUST TO FIX THE SHOCK. IN THE FEATURE JOSH SLOWLY WORKED HIS WAY AND WAS PASSED BY 2 CARS ON THE OUTSIDE AND WAS UP TO THE 4TH POSITION RUNNING STRONG. AT ONE POINT JOSH, EDDIE HOFFMAN, AND JEFF CANNON RAN 3 WIDE FOR A HALF A LAP WITHOUT SKIPPING A BEAT. THIS SHOWS THE TALENT OF THE 3 DRIVERS NOT TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. AS THEY SETTLED IN JOSH STAYED IN 4TH AND HELD OFF MIKE MONROE ON A GREEN WHITE CHECKERED RESTART TO HOLD THE 4TH POSITION AND MOVED JOSH FROM 15TH TO 13 THE IN THE POINTS.

June 2nd - Saturday turned out to be a hot and humid day. The KJ team was planning on sticking with the late model class for now. Josh ran the first practice and was pleased with the car. For the second practice the team put 2 new tires on and went and scuffed them in. His practice time was 20.10. Josh said he was determined to turn a 19.99 or better. As the cars pulled on the track and began to qualify, he sat there patiently and waited. As Josh took the green on his first lap he ran a 19.98 and his second lap was even better with a 19.88 good for 4th quick. The heat race has him starting 3rd row inside. As the green fell Josh stayed with the pack until some contact was made ahead of him and Josh backed and rode a few car lengths back. It was a good choice as the field was coming to checkered flag a car spun and collected 2 others and Josh finished 5th. In the feature Josh started 4th row inside and really could not get going at the start of the race. While racing another car Josh numerous times went to the outside only to get blocked. On an attempt when he did get to the outside up to his door the driver ran Josh into the wall. Josh regrouped and made the pass to the bottom only to get chopped into the next corner. Both cars spun harmlessly. Josh was given his spot back and restarted 7th and finished 6th in the feature. "If I wasn't held up for so long and being blocked, heck I thought the flagman was going to throw the flag at him, we would have finished 4th."
